CIF Operator has selected equipment provider Genexis for the deployment of their extensive FTTH (fiber-to-the-home) roll-out in the Netherlands.

CIF Operator provides a full Gigabit to all homes in the towns of Loenen aan de Vecht as well as Krimpen aan den IJssel in the Netherlands, in response to the
ever-increasing demand for bandwidth. This will enable customers to enjoy an array of communication services, already present or available in the future. This huge symmetrical bandwidth of a full Gigabit per second, whereby downloading a complete movie takes just seconds, can only be provided through fiber.

The fiber network that CIF Operator builds, is open. “An open network for multiple service providers is a must for our business model”, says Pieter van Grunsven, director of CIF Operator. “In addition to the open network which it enables, the Genexis Gigabit Ethernet home gateway, operating at layer 2, fully matches our requirements. It can operate both at 100 Mbps as well as in a full Gigabit mode, enabling us to upgrade customers without having to enter their homes.”

CIF (Cable Investment Fund) is a Dutch investment fund with a long term investment vision in communication infrastructure, such as masts and fixed networks. Its shareholders comprise of institutional investors and Dutch pension funds. Balancing risk and return through long term contracts with its service providers allows for multiple FTTH projects with an extended investment horizon. CIF’s service provider independent position distinguishes her from alternative network providers.

Cisco has been selected to provide central office equipment and Netadmin provides the overall management of the network. Dimension Data is as system integrator responsible for the installation, support and maintenance of the network.

By converting 100% of the HFC networks in Loenen and Krimpen, CIF offers an infrastructure which allows for all imaginable IP based services, independent of future developments in telecom and IT service structures. Reduced energy costs, up to 60%, are an extra benefit of the fiber network.

“We are delighted to supply our Gigabit home gateways to CIF Operator”, says Ron van Os, sales director of Genexis. “They are the first to provide all their customers in the Netherlands with a Gigabit capability, and have concrete plans to cover a substantial part of the Dutch fiber market. In addition, this confirms that point-to-point Ethernet is the technology of choice for open networks providers, with Genexis as the leading supplier of optical home gateways in Europe.”

OptoLock®-Enabled CPE from Genexis supports End-to-End Fiber-Powered Home Networking

Cork, Ireland-February 17, 2010
Firecomms, a leading developer of high-speed Plastic Optical Fiber (POF) transceivers and Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSELs), is pleased to announce that its OptoLock plugless fiber optic transceiver has been embedded in the first POF-enabled
customer premises equipment (CPE) to offer seamless end-to-end fiber optic networking. Offered by Genexis, the POF-enabled FiberXport® CPE, which will be shown at the 2010 FTTH Council Europe Conference next week, enables a true end-to-end fiber network by converting the glass fiber network into a plastic optical fiber home network.

“Genexis’ new CPE is the first POF-enabled product to provide a seamless fiber-powered home network,” says Hugh Hennessy, vice president of sales and marketing for Firecomms. “By bridging the gap between glass fiber and an Ethernet home network, this new product based on Firecomms’ popular OptoLock technology successfully deploys fiber directly to the set top box.

“Our relationship with Firecomms allows us to bring a highly valuable POF product to the market to meet our customers’ needs,” says Luuk Pals, director new business development for Genexis. “With its unlimited bandwidth, our POF-enabled CPE is a logical step for Genexis as it gives customers a solid, reliable, easy to install and very fast in-house infrastructure. This technology readies our customers for new services like entertainment, healthcare, e-learning, and domotica (home automation).”

The design of OptoLock enables the fiber to be cut and terminated to the exact required length on site, enabling even the most novice consumer to quickly and easily terminate the bare optical fiber. This means that OptoLock enables all the advantages of optical fiber to be brought into the home with do-it-yourself simplicity and costs. The benefits of this simple, robust high-speed interface will be significant as high-speed services like 100 Mb IPTV are delivered into the home.

Firecomms leads the development of devices to drive POF, a low-cost optical alternative to copper cabling. Due to its ease of use, large core tolerances, and low costs, POF is enjoying substantial growth in home network and point-to-point interconnection. The annual worldwide POF market is estimated to be worth over $2.5 billion in 2011, according to market research by Information Gatekeepers.

The 2010 FTTH Council Europe Conference will be held on February 24 and 25 in Lisbon, Portugal. The Genexis POF-based Fiber Termination Unit, with OptoLock, will be shown on stand S28.

Genexis teams up with Case Western Reserve University to realize a Gigabit Fiber-to-the-Home network aimed to improve lives in American cities

Eindhoven, January 26, 2010 — Genexis, a Netherlands-based company developing and manufacturing equipment for broadband fiber networks, is partnering with Case Western Reserve University to build the first of
its kind Gigabit Fiber-to-the-Home network. Called the Case Connection Zone, the pilot program will bring true broadband to communities that - up to now - have been left on the wrong side of the digital divide. Instead of providing people with just basic Internet, telephony and television, the Case Connection Zone will provide a high speed network that enables a real jump into the information age.

Fiber-to-the-Home is seen by many as a new technology that can provide more megabits per second to end-users. While true, the real potential of fiber networks lies in their power to influence the way people communicate and interact.

“Access to broadband communication is a necessity for fully engaged economic and social development,” says Lev Gonick, Case’s Vice President for Information Technology Services. “With a Gigabit fiber network, communities can access services such as healthcare and e-learning and at the same time provide people with open access to the economic opportunities that the Internet enables. This combination of strengthening the community structure and providing people with a superhighway to the digital world is vital to improving lives in American cities.”

Genexis will provide its Gigabit per second Optical Communication Gateway to the Cleveland-based initiative. Installed in the home, the gateway converts ultra-high speed signals on optical fiber to well-known broadband services including voice, television and Internet.

“The Genexis unit provides each home with the standard set of communication services plus it enables a whole host of new services in the area of healthcare, security, education and more,” says Gerlas van den Hoven, CEO of Genexis. “The Genexis gateway combines the ultimate in communication speed with the ability to provide multiple services from a variety of providers at the same time.”

With the first trial scheduled to launch later this quarter, the program aims to connect 25,000 residents in Cleveland. The initiative is joined by many leading Cleveland-based organizations including University Hospitals, The Cleveland Clinic, MetroHealth Hospital System, OneCommunity, the Great Lakes Science Center, public safety forces and the City of Cleveland itself.

“In the end, communications and Internet is not about just technology, it is about people,” Gonick continues. “Genexis has understood this very well, and has developed products for in the home that enable people to use the full potential of broadband in a simple and user-friendly way. In addition, the gateway is power-efficient and installer-friendly, a key factor when installing fiber in urban areas.”

Genexis BV and the Eindhoven University of Technology have won the ICTRegie 2009 Award for their joint innovation in the area of fiber-to-the-home. This new development — called FlexPON — enables multiple colors of light on a single optical fiber to be switched dynamically to end-users. In this way, communication bandwidth
can be optimally distributed to end-users in response to their actual needs, while simultaneously saving cost and reducing power consumption.

“As we speak, fiber is being deployed to homes in countries and cities all over the world,” says Gerlas van den Hoven, CEO of Genexis, “Fiber-to-the-home provides a huge improvement over conventional copper cable solutions. Still, the thirst for bandwidth continues to grow. With FlexPON, capacity can be added to fiber-to-the-home networks in an efficient and future-proof way.”

The development of FlexPON was done in a joint project with several partners including Genexis, the Eindhoven University of Technology and optical chip manufacturer LioniX. “The use of multiple colors of light — so-called Wavelength Division Multiplexing technology — is well-known in high-level core networks,” says Prof. Ton Koonen of the Eindhoven University of Technology. “The new innovation in FlexPON is the ability to dynamically switch the colors to the end-user to provide the right amount of bandwidth where needed and when needed.” The joint project was part of the Freeband consortium which aims to develop groundbreaking science and apply the results in the industry.

At Genexis, the FlexPON concept is being applied in new products for the fiber-to-the-home market. “FlexPON is an important addition to our successful line of triple play gateways for in the home,” Gerlas van den Hoven continues, “It is a great honor for Genexis and all our project colleagues that with this prestigious award the ICT community in the Netherlands has recognized our work and the economic impact that our innovation can create.”

The ICTRegie Award was presented on Wednesday evening May 27, 2009 during the National ICT Awards 2009 ceremony in the Nieuwe Kerk in The Hague. Distinguished guests were Deputy Mayor of The Hague Frits Huffnagel and the Minister for Foreign Trade Frank Heemskerk. The award was presented by the chairman of the jury, Gerard van Oortmerssen, director of ICTRegie.
